Jaipur is the weekend for when the hills are cold or crowded: close, flat, warm in winter, and full of things to see. The trick is to go in the right months and start every day early.

Getting there

Buses run all day. At our last check, a typical service took about 6 hours, the fastest about 3 h 05 min, with fares from ₹275. Jaipur station is in the city, and the airport is about 10 km out if you're flying in.

When to go

Only one season really works. From our climate data for Jaipur:

  • October to March: 9–32°C, and about 1 rainy day a month. December and January days are around 21–23°C, perfect for walking around forts.
  • April to June: 38–40°C by day. Sightseeing in that heat is miserable.
  • July and August: 16–18 rainy days a month, humid.

Saturday: Amber and around

  1. Be at Amber Fort by 8 am: the Diwan-e-Aam, the Sheesh Mahal and Ganesh Pol, before the heat and the crowds.
  2. Walk 5 minutes behind the fort to Panna Meena ka Kund, the stepwell everyone photographs.
  3. Stop for photos at Jal Mahal on the Amer road on the way back.
  4. Lunch at Laxmi Misthan Bhandar (LMB) in Johari Bazaar.

In the evening, the Amber light-and-sound show, or dinner and folk performances at Chokhi Dhani.

Sunday: the walled city

Breakfast is pyaaz kachori at Rawat Mishthan Bhandar on Station Road, at 8 am. Then:

  1. City Palace: Mubarak Mahal, Pritam Niwas Chowk and its four painted gates.
  2. Jantar Mantar next door, the 18th-century observatory.
  3. Hawa Mahal from the inside, then the view of its facade from Wind View Café opposite.

With an extra day

The Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri (about 82 km) is one of the most striking sights in Rajasthan and easy to fit in on the way back towards Delhi. Bhangarh (about 54 km) is another popular day trip.

Plan your dates on the Jaipur weekend guide.

From April to June. Our climate data has days of 38–40°C then. October to March is far better, with December and January days around 21–23°C.

About 6 hours on a typical service, and about 3 hours on the fastest, at our last check. Fares started from ₹275.

I build Tavora and RailRoute. RailRoute started with Indian Railways data: which trains run on time, which routes actually work. Tavora uses it to plan weekends out of Delhi end to end. Here I write about leaving on a Friday night and being back for Monday.
