Shimla or Manali for a weekend from Delhi? An honest comparison

Representative photo

Shimla is reachable by a day train and a toy train; Manali means two nights on a bus. Travel time, snow, weather and what each weekend actually looks like.

It's the classic question before a first trip to the hills: Shimla or Manali? For a normal two-night weekend from Delhi, my honest answer is Shimla. For a long weekend, or if snow is the whole point, Manali. Here's why.

Getting there decides most of it

Shimla is the only one of the two you can reach by a fast train. The Kalka Shatabdi (12011) leaves New Delhi at 7:40 am daily and reaches Kalka at 11:40 am. From Kalka it's the toy train (the Himalayan Queen) or the road up; Shimla is about 38 km away as the crow flies. A typical bus takes about 8 h 50 min, from ₹540.

Manali has no train that helps: the nearest railhead, Joginder Nagar, is 47 km away and not served from Delhi. That leaves the bus: about 11 h 30 min on a typical service, 9 h 45 min on the fastest, from ₹600. Kullu (Bhuntar) airport is about 41 km from town.

Two overnight buses and one hotel night is a lot of road for one day in Manali. Two nights there makes it worth it.

Weather and snow

From our climate data for both towns:

  • January: Shimla -3 to 9°C with about 2 snow days. Manali 1 to 8°C with about 5.7 snow days.
  • December: Shimla about 0.7 snow days, Manali about 2.4.
  • October: both are dry and clear. Shimla has about 2 rainy days, Manali about 9.
  • July and August: both wet, with 19–25 rainy days a month.

So if you're chasing snow from December to February, Manali is the better bet. Otherwise Shimla's drier autumn is hard to beat.

What a weekend looks like

In Shimla, the town is the trip. Walk the Ridge, Christ Church (1857) and Scandal Point; go up to Jakhu Temple by ropeway or a steep 30-minute walk; lunch at the Indian Coffee House on the Mall. On Sunday, take the guided tour of the Viceregal Lodge on Observatory Hill and the Himachal State Museum. Kufri, Chail and Barog are all within a short drive.

In Manali, the valley is the trip. Day one: Hidimba Devi temple (1553) in the deodar forest, Old Manali, and the hot baths at Vashisht. Day two: leave early for Solang Valley before the traffic, ride the ropeway or fly tandem, then go through the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel to Sissu in Lahaul, which needs no permit.

My pick

  • Two nights, first time in the hills, or travelling with parents: Shimla. The day train makes it easy.
  • Three nights, friends, snow: Manali.
  • Somewhere in between: Narkanda, past Shimla, has more snow than Shimla and fewer people. I wrote about it here.

Questions people ask

Which is closer to Delhi, Shimla or Manali?

Shimla. A typical bus takes about 8 h 50 min to Shimla and about 11 h 30 min to Manali, and only Shimla has a fast train for most of the way (the Kalka Shatabdi to Kalka).

Where am I more likely to see snow in winter?

Manali. Our climate data has about 5.7 snow days in January in Manali against about 2 in Shimla, and Manali's Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel side get more.

Do I need a permit to go through the Atal Tunnel?

Not to visit Sissu, just beyond the tunnel's north end. Rohtang Pass is a separate trip that needs its own permit and taxi.
